今外が非常に寒い。マイナス３０度くらいで、体感温度がマイナス４１度。先週まであったかくて０度あたりだったのに。まあ、こんなに寒い日は外にはでないよ。ってか、１１月くらいから全然外にでてないや。猫は外に行かなくても、あったかーいセントラルヒーティングの室内にいられるからいいよね。仕事にも行かなくていいし。日当たりにいいところでこうして毛づくろいしています。（あと瞑想も。）

It's really cold out. It's about -30 degrees Celsius or -22 degrees Fahrenheit, but with the windchill it feels like -42 degrees Celsius or -42 degrees Fahrenheit (hey, it's the same number in both!). Just last week, it was only about 0 degree Celsius or 32 degree Fahrenheit. I just don't go out on such a cold day like this. Oh, wait, I haven't really gone out since November. Haha. We cats don't have to go to work, and we get to stay indoors with a central heating system. I am glad about that. I just sit in a sunny spot like this to groom myself and to meditate.

In the winter, the sun shines deep inside of the room because it's quiet low in the sky. I love it. Its gentle warmth is always worth an hour or so of sunbathing time.
冬には、お日様が部屋の奥のほうまで差し込むんだよね。これはお日様の高度が低いからなんだけど。ほんわかとしたあったかさはとてもステキで、だいたい１時間くらいは日向ぼっこしちゃうよ。

Another fun is boxes. In December, we have lots of boxes around the house. I love it.
ほかに楽しいのはやっぱり箱。１２月は色んな箱がうちにあってうれしい。

The other day, I got something on my nose. It didn't come off, so I didn't want to show it to anyone. But Human #2 noticed it and chased after me with a camera. When she tried to take a photo (above), I shook my head to say, "No!" I finally tried to hide behind a foot stool, which was quite a way from her (below). Somehow she managed to get a pretty good picture of me. Sigh.
こないだお鼻になんかつきました。なかなか取れないから誰にも見せないようにしていたんだけど、人間２号には気づかれてしまって、おまけにカメラを向けられちゃった。写真とろうとしているときに、「いやいや」って首を振ったのが上の写真。足のっけるやつの裏に隠れて、結構距離があったから安心したと思ってたけど、結局写真とられてしまった。あ～あ。

Recently, Human #2 has been quite busy, so she sorts of ignores me. She even bought a funny char. On this chair, she doesn't share her lap with me. It is called a kneeling chair (like this). So, I have to find another place to be while she works at her computer during the day.
最近人間２号は結構忙しくて私のことを放っておきがちです。おまけに変な形の椅子まで買った。この椅子に座ったら、ひざに乗れないのだ。バランスチェアとか言う代物で、写真はこんな感じ。ともかく、そのせいで、日中はほかの居場所を探さなきゃならなくなってしまいしました。

箱はいつも居心地がいいね。

このローブはもこもこであったかいです。もとは人間２号のなんだけど、今は私のです。

Here is a dog named Trouble, Human #2's friend's dog. He won the first prize at the contest! That's great! But I just don't get it. Jumping into the water can be fun? Mmm. But he seems to enjoy it, so that's good for him.

It's July, but the outside temperature was 9 degrees Celsius (48 degrees Fahrenheit) on the weekend... I have to cover up my nose in this kind of weather.

A couple days ago, I had to pay a visit to the vet hospital. It's not exactly my favorite place to be, but I guess it couldn't have been helped. I had a huge pain while I was hanging out in the backyard -- a nice cool morning outing. Out of the blue, I couldn't do anything but scream because the pain was too much to bear. Human #2 came running to check on me. I kept on screaming. So, Human #2 put me in the carrier to take me to the vet hospital. Again, I tell you, I hate being there because there are a lot of other cats and animals, which makes me nervous. But I guess the vet doc helped me because the pain went away. I had to stay there for a day with a needle stuck in my arm, though. When the nurse came to take away the needle in the late afternoon, I had to put up a fight. Oh well. At around 5:00, Human #2 came to pick me up and we drove home. It sure is nice to be home. Both humans were really worried about me, but I will be OK. Well, I am getting older, 12 years old now, so just treat me well. After all, I am the princess here.

２日ほど前に獣医に行くことになってしまいました。あんまり進んで行きたい場所ではないけど、仕方ないですな。その日は、まだ朝涼しいうちに外に行っておこうと思って庭に出ていたの。で、突然ひどい痛みで叫ばずにはいられなくなったのね。人間２号が走って様子を身に来たんだけど、私が全然鳴き止まないから、ペットキャリーに入って獣医さんのとこに向かったというわけ。また言うけど、獣医さんの病院って他にも沢山猫とかいるし、嫌なんだけど、まあ仕方なかったね。獣医さんのおかげで多分痛みもなくなったんだし。でも、一日中腕に針がささった状態でいるのはちょっときつかった。夕方に針を抜くときはちょっと抵抗しちゃった。午後５時くらいに人間２号が迎えに来てくれてうちに帰ったんだけど、やっぱりうちはいいね～。人間二人とも凄く心配してたみたいだけど、大丈夫だって。まあ、もう私も１２歳だし若くはないから、せいぜい丁重に扱ってよね。私がここでは女王様なんだし。

This morning, when Humans were leaving for their weekly grocery hunting to the downtown market, two of these were just about to pop, with their covers for the flowers still attached on them. But when they got back from their hunt, they were both completely open. They popped! Is that why they are called POPpies"?

今朝、人間達がダウンタウンのマーケットンい行く時はまだ花びらの周りにカラをつけて開いていなかったポピーが、人間達が帰ってきたときにはまるで、ポン！と音をたてたように開いていました。ポン！という音は英語ではポップ！なので、名前がポピーなのだろうか。

This is a picture of a lotus flower. It is such a beautiful flower, but my humans do not have this kind of flower at home. Actually Human #2 is not that good at keeping flowers alive at home. She blames me for chewing up leaves, but they taste so good!

It's been sunny and warmer these days. It is nice to sunbathe like this in Human #2's room where it has a south window. このところあったかくて晴れた日が続きますね。こうやって南向きの窓のある人間2号の部屋で日向ぼっこするのっていいですねえ。

えらい犬・Good doggy

ご無沙汰してました。人間2号がしばらく留守にしていたので中々ブログを書けませんでした。これはとてもえらい犬の話です。（ビデオは英語だけど、車にひかれたあと2匹目の犬に助けられた犬は助かったそうです。）

I'm sorry for the long break since the last post. Human #2 was away for a while, and I could not update my blog. Here is a moving video of a dog rescuing another dog. Thank goodness that the first dog was saved in the end!

新しいキーボード・A new keyboard

Apparently, this is Human #2's new keyboard. She somehow decided to put the keyboard on her lap to type. Her lap is supposed to be my place, so I decided to squeeze in to reclaim my place.

これは人間2号の新しいキーボードだそうだ。なぜだか膝にキーボードを乗せてタイプするのが流行っているらしいけど、膝って私の場所でしょ？私の場所だってのを証明するために私も乗ってみた。

ももという名のイノシシ・A wild boar named Momo

I was aware that there are lots of dogs and cats with the name Momo in Japan primarily because it is a fashionable name. But I didn't know that there is a "pet" wild boar named Momo... This Momo was abandoned by her mother when she was small, and this human gave her milk to bring her up. It's good that there are good humans on this earth.

犬や猫でももと言う名前は聞いたことがあったけど（そりゃあ、いい名前だからね）、同じ名前のペットのイノシシがいたとは。小さいころに親に見捨てられたらしいよ。なので、この人間が拾ってミルクをあげて育てたそうで。いい人間がいるっていうのは、すてたもんじゃないね、この地球も。

獣医さん・A vet visit

Human #2 took me to the vet's hospital today. Boy, what a horrible day it was. First of all, I hate the car ride because it makes me nauseous, so I let her know about that quite clearly by whining all the way there and back. The vet found a bald spot on my back. How embarrassing! I'm 11 years old (=60 human years) but still a lady in my heart. Then, he took my temperature in an unspeakable place! My temperature is normal and so is my weight (3.4 kg). Actually, I am as healthy as I can be. Why did Human #2 have to take me there to confirm that? She never listens to me about these things. Also, because of my age, they had to take some blood out of me to check if I am indeed healthy. I told them, loud and clear, that I was fine. Of course, I am fine. (The vet just called to say so.) And on top of all that, he gave me vaccines. Phew, what a day it was.

人間2号に連れられて獣医さんのとこに行って来ました。言うまでも無く、今日はひどい日でした。まず車に乗ると吐き気がするから嫌だし。車に乗ってる間中、行きも帰りも、大声でうったえてましたよ。あと、お医者さんは背中にあるハゲも見つけてくれちゃったし。恥ずかしかった！一応11歳という歳でも（人間だと60歳くらい））、心の中はいつまでもレディーだからさあ。それから、体温計をあんなところに入れちゃって・・・。私の体温は普通だし、体重だって普通なんだから（3.4 kg）。こんなに健康なんだから、あんなとこに連れて行かれなくたっていいって言ってるのに。私の言うことは聞かないんだから。おまけに高齢だからという理由で血まで抜かれたよ。「私は健康だし！」って大きい声で言ったんだけどね。血液検査の結果も問題無しだって、いまお医者さんから電話がかかってきたしね。それから、ワクチンも打たれたよ。あ～あ、なんてひどい日。

These monkeys in hot spring make me wonder if they don't get cold after they get out of there. (They don't use bath towels, do they?) I just don't get that they like soaking in bath... I as a cat hate to get my body wet!
お猿さんたちが温泉に入ってるけど、お湯から上がったら湯冷めしないんだろうか。（まずバスタオルなんて使わないだろうし。）だいたいお湯につかるってことから不思議。私は猫だから体がぬれるってこと自体がいやなんだよね。

(1) When your human boils water, watch.
(2) When the human takes the kettle off the stove, get as close as possible to the heat source.
(3) Stay there for a few minutes until your whiskers curls up. (This process is easier with the electric stoves and not the gas type.)
このカッコいいくるくるおひげを作る方法：
（１）人間がお湯を沸かすときにはちゃんと見てること。
（２）やかんをコンロから下ろした時がチャンス。暖かい火の元にできる限り近づくこと。
（３）おひげがくるくるになるまでそこにいること。（ただ、この方法は、ガスコンロよりも電気コンロの方がやりやすいんだよね。）

あけましておめでとう・Happy New Year!

The holidays are over and the new year has started. As I get older, I think I am getting smarter and notice more things. I just realized that when humans come home at dinner time, they cheated me by not giving me a "welcome-home kibble." See, Human #2 is trained to give me a treat whenever she comes home from her outing. But during the holiday time, when she came home with Human #1 around the dinner time, she did not do as she was supposed to. I was all excited to have dinner, so I forgot to remind her of the treat, which I guess was my fault, too. This year, I will demand my kibble even if they come home around the dinner time.

冬休みも終わり、新年ですね。だんだん年をとるにつれて賢くなってきて色々なことが目に入るようになりました。最近気づいたのは、人間達が夕ご飯の時間に帰ってくると「お帰りカリカリ」をくれるのを忘れてるってこと。人間2号がうちに帰ってきたらおやつをくれるようにしつけたはずなのに、冬休みの間、人間2号が1号と一緒に夕ご飯の時間ころに帰ってきたとき、そのとおりにしなかったんですよ。まあ、夕ご飯にワクワクしすぎてすっかり忘れてた私の責任でもあるけど。けど、今年こそは二人が夕ご飯の時間に帰宅しても「お帰りカリカリ」は忘れないようにもらうようにします。

クリスマス・Christmas

For Christmas eve, I get presents of boxes (not boxes of presents). Then, humans will put extra treats in a box, so I fish them out to eat. What a nice custom it is. クリスマスイブには箱の贈り物をもらう。その日には、おやつがもっともらえるんだよね。なんていい習慣なんだろうね。

On the following day is Christmas Day, but humans don't really do much on that day. They just relax, and so do I. クリスマス当日には別に何にも特別なことはしないでゆっくりしてるのが、うちの人間達です。だから、私もゆっくりのんびりお昼寝。

猫の手・Cat's paws

Human #2 said that she'd even borrow cat's paws (a Japanese expression meaning that she's busy so she could use any help). Here they are. Cat's paws are actually quite versatile.

冬の日差し・Winter sunlight

In the winter, the sun reaches the back of Human #2's room, warming up the bookshelf that does not receive much sun for the rest of the year. It's nice to sit there and absorb all the warmth of the sun. It's interesting that it can be really cold outside (-30degrees C or -22 degrees F), the sun brightly shines here. I really love it.
冬になると、普段届かない日差しが部屋の奥にある本棚まで届くんだよね。そこに座って日向ぼっこするのがとても気持ちいいです。外がすごく寒くても（－30度とか）日が照っているのが最高だね。

Oh, Humans took away the standing area (please see the post on November 20th) where I used to stand on to open the cupboard doors. They even installed magnetic latches on these doors. Now I can't get to my olive oil, and I am having a withdrawal symptoms. This is what I looks like when I am having a craving for olive oil.
そうそう、人間たちは戸棚用の台をとっぱらっちゃった。前そこに乗っかって戸棚をあけたりしてオリーブオイルを舐めてたのに。（11月20日の写真を見てください）あと、戸棚には磁石でくっつく金具までつけてるの。これで油が舐められなくなっちゃったよ。この写真は禁断症状が出てるときの顔です。

To brighten things up, Human #2 bought these flowers. I am admiring them, too. But their heads are so big. How can the stem hold the big head?

Well, the hugest one is being supported by a plastic tube like a straw. Are you supposed to take this off when you put them in a vase?? なんと一番でかいアタマはストローみたいなもので支えてありました。花瓶に入れるときってこれ、取るんもんじゃないの？

This is a neighbor cat whom my Humans met on their walk. Cats like to talk with (human) neighbors, too. my Humans often tell me after getting home that they met other cats like this one. I am pretty much content being home without meeting other cats.
Here is a nice quote by Karel Capek, "Quite obviously a cat trusts human beings: but she doesn't trust a cat because she knows her better than we do."

ちょっと暗いですな。このごろ夕方から寝る前までの夜の時間は、人間1号の部屋で過ごします。年とってきたせいか（私ももう11歳）、夏でもあったかいところが好きで、隙を見つけては人間1号の膝によじ登るんだけど、人間1号は暑がり。なので、別の場所に移されます。この写真の私は、仕方ないので人間1号の服の上に陣取ったときのもようです。
The pictures are a bit on the dark side, aren't they? These days, I spend the twilight time before going to bed in Human #1's room. It may be because I am getting older (I am now 11), I tend to be fond of warm places even in summer. Whenever I find an opportunity, I climb up Human#1's lap, but he can't stand being too hot especially now. So, he basically moves me to another place. These pictures show the situation after I got moved by him onto his clothes.

We have lots of those clover flowers. They are pretty despite being just white.
うちの庭には、シロツメクサの花が結構咲いてる。白いだけなんだけど、かわいいよね。

This is a baby plant of Mitsuba, or Japanese parsley. It's already the middle of July, and I wonder if this plant will fully grow for humans to eat during the growing season.
これはミツバの赤ちゃん。今もう7月も中旬なんだけど、ちゃんと食べれる大きさになるんだろうか。

It's been raining quite a bit this summer, so mushrooms are popping up everywhere, too.
今年の夏は雨が多いので、キノコもあちこちで顔出してます。

On the weekend, I got to spend some time outside with Human #1. I was watching him plant some new trees. He hopes to have some berries out of them one of these years. The berries are called Saskatoons which are like red blueberries.

近所のねこ・A neighbor cat

He is my neighbor on the next block. Humans sometimes see him while they stroll around the neighborhood. Human #2 mentioned to me that he has one leg missing. I wonder why humans are hung up on lack of things, but he is living his life to the fullest and is happy. I suppose it is easy to feel sorry for lack of something. But I think knowing that you are alive and feeling grateful for that fact alone is the most important thing. If one focuses on not having something, happiness would not be able to visit.

この猫はうちのご近所さんです。人間が散歩に出かけるときに時々見かけるようです。人間２号が、この猫ちゃんは足が一本ないんだよって言ってた。なんで人間っていうのは「ないもの」にこだわるんだろうね、この猫は元気に楽しく生きているのに。まあ、確かにないものがあるっていうのは、残念に思うのかもしれない。だけど、自分が生きていてそのことに感謝できるっていうのが、一番大切なんだと思う。ないものにばかりこだわっていたら、幸せも顔出せないよね。

箱の中・In A Box

この箱がどこからきたのかと言えば、オフィス用品の配達のおじさんからです。この配達なんだけど、朝の9時から午後5時の間にくるということでした。で、人間2号は、「まんなかをとって、だいたい1時くらいにはくるかな～。まだかなまだかな。」ってずっと待ってたけど、結局来たのは午後４：４５。人間1号は「そういうの大抵は一番遅くくるもんなんだよね。」って言ってた。人間2号は勉強が足りないな。
This box came from a delivery man who brought some office supplies. The delivery was supposed to come between 9:00AM and 5:00PM. Somehow Human #1 thought, "Well, I think they'd come in the middle -- around 1:00ish? I wonder when they come,” and kept on waiting. In the end, they came at 4:45PM. Human #1 said laughing, "If they say they'd come between 9:00 and 5:00, it usually happens closer to the end limit." Human #2 still has to learn more things of this world.

Apparently, Human #1 and a group of his previous and current students went out for lunch. Human #2 somehow tagged along as well. But as they ordered their lunch, the difference between the former (scientists) and the latter (Human #2, the non-scientist) became apparent. The scientists -- get this -- all ordered huevos rancheros ("ranch eggs" in Spanish) while the non-scientist ordered something totally different all by herself. As I listened to this story told by Human #2, I became more and more convinced that there must be something about eggs and scientists. A mystery...
今日、人間１号とその生徒たち（以前のと今の）がお昼を食べに出かけたそうな。人間２号もなぜかついていくことになったんだって。で、注文する段階になって、前者（科学者たち）と後者（人間二号、非科学者）の違いが明らかになったそうです。なんと、科学者達は一人残らずウエボス・ランチェロス（牧場の卵って意味のスペイン語）をたのんだけど、非科学者は一人だけまったく違うものを注文したそうです。この話を人間２号から聞いて、科学者と卵の間には何らかの関係があるに違いないって思うようになったよ。う～む、謎だな。

When we got up on Monday, March 22nd, there was snow again -- like this.
３月２２日（月）には、起きてみたらまた雪が積もってました。こんな感じ。
寒くなっちゃったからまたこうやって暖房のとこを陣取るしかなくなっちゃったんだよね。
So, I had to stay on the vent hole again to keep warm.

雪・Snow

今週になってから、人間2号もやっと「春だ！」と認めて自転車に乗り出した。と、思ったら、今日になってみぞれ混じりの雪が降ってましたね。やっぱりね。3月はまだ春じゃないんだよ、って天が言ってるようなものだね。
Earlier this week, Human #2 finally decided, "It's spring!!" and started riding her bike. But as soon as she started doing that, today wet snow started falling from the sky. It was as if the sky was telling us that it is not yet spring. Oh well.
